Dr. Ir. Eng. António Madureira graduated with a Licenciatura degree in Electrical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of Porto and with a MSc degree in Telecommunications at Delft University of Technology. In December of 2011, he obtained his PhD at the Delft University of Technology under the promotion of Prof. Nico Baken.
The worldwide extraordinary level of interest in Digital Information Networks (DINs)' deployment among nations is due to the strong perception that they bring economic, social and environmental value. However, current scientific attempts to evidence this perception take speculative, elusive or limited conclusions. In this thesis, we propose a novel framework to account for the value of DINs. Most relevantly, our framework is capable to account for any form of value, whereas existing literature tends to focus on orthodox economic measures of performance such as productivity. To exemplify, we use our framework to explain evolutionary change in policy making, economy and biology. With this approach, on one hand, we underpin how DINs generate value in these three domains. On the other hand, we provide significant theoretical contributions, which are discussed relatively to the Advocacy Coalition Framework (the state of the art reference framework in policy making), to the initiative Generalized Darwinism (in evolutionary economics), and to the Modern Evolutionary Synthesis, the current paradigm in biological evolution. Finally, this thesis contributes to address business interoperability, with the ultimate goal of increasing the value generated through DINs. From an empirical perspective, our work is supported by a rich dataset of Eurostat on the ICT use by enterprises and households and a case study of an electronic identification management system in Austria.
